Chapter 15

Here it Comes

Ira

They split between a few of the houses that night. The bulk of Wolf and Coyote crew surrounded the kids with comfort and safety.

It wasn’t just Ira and her men in one of the houses. Des and Simid were there, too. And Pan came and went. It was almost like he was compelled to check on Nev at certain intervals.

At Lirit’s instruction, En and Wel went between two different houses to offer their support. Those two were quiet but Ira kind of enjoyed having them around. They were extra bodies and muscles, and they were pleasant. Roc and Aleyn were split between them as well, though Aleyn remained mostly out of sight since the kids were a bit traumatized by vampires right now.

For a long time, Ira sat in the doorway of the house she and her men were in. They had chosen a grouping of four houses with their doors facing the middle. Ira hadn’t noticed before but many of the housing was set up in this fashion. Four to seven of them were turned inwards, their doors facing a central location.

And in the center was usually a fire by the looks of it. As there was tonight.

Once more, it was Pan who sat next to her when he came back out of the house, shutting the door behind him. Ira frowned at him. This nonconfrontational Pan was a bit unsettling.

“I think you’re right,” he said at last.

“You’re only admitting something like that when no one is here to hear it,” Ira said, crossing her arms and leaning against the frame and further away from him.

He smiled. “I think we should send these kids to the twin cities to be looked after. We’ll have Rockstar choose a couple Wolf and send them out. When they return, they can head down to Stories and then further on to Nursery, scouting the area for any left alive, or any newly dropped. Anyone they find, they can bring down the creek into the twin cities for safekeeping until we get the cities restructured again.”

“And you’re still set on making this a child labor island,” Ira prompted.

Pan frowned at her. After a heavy sigh, he shook his head. “We may have gotten rid of the skinned boys, but there are still the monsters of the forest. Those unnamed that slipped in from the Shadelands. There will be pirates again, whether we like it or not. The crocs are not all…” He trailed off, waving his hand in the air. “They’re not all like Roc. He might be the biggest but he’s also the most civilized, believe it or not.”

“Not,” Ira said, rolling her eyes.

Pan’s lips quirked at her response. “They need to survive, Ira. They need to be able to protect themselves and those around them at as young an age as possible. You can’t be everywhere at once to protect them.”

“And if I come up with another solution?” Ira asked.

Pan licked his lips. Ira refused to drop her gaze to watch.
